Figuring out Afrofuturism

Heyyy this is my first update for my game Motherland!

So far I am still in the early stages of refining my game concept as well as fleshing out all the details of the world. When I was thinking about the content of the game I was sure that I wanted to make it sci-fi as vast developments in technology would fit with the overall storyline of the game returning to a place that is familiar but at the same time completely new. I wanted to stick within the genre and aesthetics of afro-futurism so I started to watch documentaries on ancient African civilization, Africa before colonialism, and in a way took a similar route to some of the creatives of black panther drawing inspiration from Africa.

Afrofuturism: a movement in literature, music, art, etc., featuring futuristic or science fiction themes which incorporate elements of black history and culture.

Then I thought wait, it's afro FUTURISM, while  roots in African history gave me the inspiration to demonstrate the sophistication of the African diaspora I was going back in time rather than looking ahead. So I switch creative direction and started looking deeper into the African American experience, black history, and radical movements led by black people in America. That's when I decided I want the world I created to resemble the future that has been attempted and waited on far too long by the people who came before me while also exploring themes of black capitalism, misogynoir,  colorism, homophobia and transphobia.
