A dance battle system?!
Hey, I'm back again with another update.
Since my last post on here, I have accomplished quite a bit! I created a chart comparing elements of black culture and how they can be linked to or manifested through science fiction in my game. The versatility of blackness from hair to visual aesthetics has given me a lot of ideas where it comes to character design. One of the connections I thought would be cool to use is dance as a combat system. From the renegade to the woah, dance and music have roots in black culture and a wider impact on popular culture. It is not a new concept to incorporate dance as a part of gameplay, one of my favorite games growing up was Just Dance and Fortnite dances are super popular and memed beyond oblivion. This is how I plan to incorporate dance; The player would have a dance style they can choose from at the beginning of the game during the tutorial (Drumline, step up, majorette, voguing, hip hop, etc.) and as they defeat more enemies they would be able to unlock different moves to use while fighting.
Currently, I am working on building a prototype of player movement as well as the combat system. I have decided to prioritize this over world-building and writing the script for the narrative as those parts of the game won't be accessible or make sense if I end up not being able to execute it or implement it correctly. For the prototype, I have decided to use Unity as that is what I am most familiar with and its compatible with blender as well as Adobes Mixamo for the animations as it supports Unity, has a variety of dance animations, and it is free hehe. Let me know your thoughts, questions, and opinions in the comments below!
